US DoJ Offers $11 Million Reward for Ransomware Kingpin Tied to $18 Billion Theft

The U.S. Department of Justice has posted an $11 million reward for Volodymyr Tymoshchuk, accused of orchestrating ransomware attacks that led to the theft of $18 billion from over 250 companies.

The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) has announced an $11 million bounty for Volodymyr Viktorovich Tymoshchuk, a Ukrainian national allegedly responsible for sophisticated ransomware attacks affecting over 250 companies worldwide.

According to the DoJ, these attacks resulted in a staggering $18 billion theft over a span of three years.

Tymoshchuk, known online by several aliases including deadforz, Boba, msfv, and farnetwork, is accused of orchestrating ransomware schemes that included notorious brands like MegaCortex, LockerGoga, and Nefilim.

Between late 2018 and October 2021, he allegedly launched attacks that fully disrupted operations for various organizations. For example, LockerGoga was used against Norsk Hydro, causing damages of approximately $81 million.

As the DoJ pursues its efforts to hold cybercriminals accountable, officials emphasize their commitment to protecting businesses from digital threats and extortion.

“Tymoshchuk is a serial ransomware criminal who targeted blue-chip American companies and healthcare institutions,” stated Joseph Nocella Jr, US Attorney.

This case underscores ongoing issues in global cyber security, reflecting the international coordination needed to tackle such pervasive threats.
