GOG Aims to Bring Classic Japanese Games to PC: Emphasizing the Importance of Technical and Cultural Understanding
GOG is working towards reviving iconic Japanese games, showcasing the persistence needed to engage with developers and the cultural nuances involved.
GOG, formerly known as Good Old Games, is making strides to reincarnate classic Japanese titles onto the PC platform. Senior PR representative Piotr Gnyp stated, “Working with Japanese partners often requires demonstrating both technical capability and cultural understanding.”
They have successfully re-released several iconic games such as Silent Hill 4: The Room, various entries in the Metal Gear series, and classic Castlevania and Contra titles. The process of engaging with developers can be lengthy, as seen with Diablo, which took nearly a decade of discussions to secure its availability.
Capcom has allowed GOG to bring back hits like Dino Crisis and Resident Evil. Gnyp shared that navigating this terrain requires time, persistence, and building trust:
“GOG has been doing this for well over a decade, and we’re constantly reaching out to secure iconic games. Sometimes, it takes years.”
Consequently, preserving these games means adhering to rigorous QA and certification processes similar to launching an entirely new title, ensuring a quality experience for both nostalgia-seekers and new players alike. As preservation efforts continue, GOG aims to safeguard video game history while adapting to modern standards.
