Revamping System Shock 2: The Challenge of Adding Controller Support

The transition to adding controller support in the System Shock 2 remaster involved significant voice acting re-recording efforts.

The Challenge of Controller Support in the Remaster

Adding controller functionality to the System Shock 2 remaster required re-recording decades-old voice acting. The remaster brings a modern touch to the classic game, but faced hurdles due to its fully voice-acted nature.

The Problem

System Shock 2 initiates with character creation, serving as both a tutorial and an introduction to player abilities. This is where complications arose: the voice instructions made it necessary to adjust for the remaster.

Daniel Grayshon, the lead producer at Nightdive Studios, noted:

“To jump, simply press the spacebar.”

This creates an issue when adapting for wide controller compatibility as the original scenes used detailed keypress instructions. The new voiceovers needed to avoid specific control references.

This presented a unique challenge; however, the team worked to ensure all players would have a seamless experience regardless of the input method.

Final Thoughts

While adding controller support was an ambitious undertaking, it is a testament to how video game remakes can adapt to modern gaming trends without losing the charm of their predecessors.
