Pete Hines, the former marketing vice president at Bethesda, criticized the decision to use the name ‘Prey’ for Arkane’s 2017 immersive sim. He expressed his frustration, stating, “I definitely pissed some people off internally over that because I fought so hard against using that name.” Hines mentioned that a significant amount of discussion centered around explaining the name rather than focusing on the game’s qualities.
Arkane’s 2017 rendition of ‘Prey’ was distinctive yet had to share its title with a previous game and a canceled sequel. Hines lamented that this resulted in lengthy explanations to potential players, affecting the game’s marketing.
Years later, Bethesda resurrected the ‘Prey’ name for this unrelated project, which sparked further discontent among the development team, including Arkane’s founder, who also wished to avoid using the name. Hines conveyed regret over not successfully changing the minds of decision-makers about the title, emphasizing how the focus on explaining the name detracted from the game’s promotion.
Currently, ‘Prey’ is celebrated as a phenomenal title and is available at a discount, with up to 80% off on platforms like GOG.
