In recent years, Konami has reminded fans that it owns the Metal Gear franchise, culminating in last month’s release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of the acclaimed game using Unreal Engine 5. While faithful, the remake has sparked discussions about the series’ future.
David Hayter, who voiced both Solid and Naked Snake, shared his thoughts on the potential absence of series creator Hideo Kojima in upcoming titles, calling it a possibility, albeit one that cannot replicate Kojima’s unique genius and quirky personality.
Hayter expressed surprise at discovering Raiden would be the protagonist instead of Solid Snake during a recording session for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. He recounted, “I found out in the booth while we were recording, and I’m like, ‘What the hell?’” This twist was a significant part of the game’s narrative structure, aiming to catch longtime fans off guard.
Reflecting on the unique storytelling of the Metal Gear series, Hayter noted the creativity involved in its scripts, remarking, “I could never do this” when faced with the complexity and ambition of Kojima’s writing.
