Randy Pitchford Reflects on the Borderlands Film's Direction: 'It Could Have Been Much Worse'

Gearbox Entertainment's Randy Pitchford discusses the Borderlands movie and its potential missteps under his direction.

As I navigate through the chaotic journey of life, I often remind myself, “it could always be worse.” Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, recently shared his thoughts on the newly released Borderlands movie. He took the opportunity at Gamescom to assert, “It would have been way worse if I directed it. I’m not a filmmaker! Eli Roth is an outstanding filmmaker; believe me, this movie would have been a disaster under my direction.”

Yet, there’s a dilemma here. The Borderlands adaptation is currently facing its own struggles, boasting a mere 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a minor improvement over the previous 7%. This hefty criticism isn’t without merit, considering some critics equated it to the low standards set by notorious filmmaker Uwe Boll.

In what appeared to be a failed attempt to restore some faith in the film, Pitchford humorously connected the movie’s quality to creative risks and artistic merit, citing his admiration for The Beatles as he discussed creativity’s inherent challenges. Despite both the audience and critics dismissing the film, Pitchford advocates for continual creative endeavors, suggesting that just because one outing didn’t succeed, it doesn’t mean future projects shouldn’t be attempted.

Ultimately, the lingering question is whether the film could have been salvaged or perhaps even improved if Pitchford had taken the helm. Some speculate that driven by passion and creativity, his version may have exhibited distinct flaws, yet they could have contributed to a refreshingly unique take.
