Emotes Banned in Fortnite to Curb Inappropriate Behavior
Epic Games has implemented a ban on certain emotes in Fortnite that led to suggestive behavior among players, particularly in party modes.
Epic Games has recently acted against a troubling trend in Fortnite by banning certain emotes, preventing players from using them in close proximity, an effort aimed at reducing suggestive behavior during gameplay.
The emotes targeted by this change include moves like “poki” and “party hips” when combined with actions such as “bring it around” and “ride the pony”. This shift particularly affects the game’s party royale mode. A popular Fortnite news account eloquently noted that “gooning has been vaulted in Fortnite.”
Despite the avatars being entirely clothed, the nature of the emotes led to unintended suggestive contexts. Additionally, Fortnite has previously faced backlash over the inappropriate use of pop culture dance moves, especially in sensitive in-game contexts, such as virtual settings reminiscent of historical tragedies.
Epic’s move follows a general trend seen in other gaming platforms, such as Roblox, which has tightened its community standards regarding romantic and sexual content. In a world catering to a younger audience, these restrictions may help maintain a suitable environment, reflecting a growing sensitivity towards potentially harmful implications in gaming.
