Steam Challenges 19-Year-Old User to Prove Their Age

A humorous incident unfolds as a long-time Steam user, aged 19, is prompted to confirm their age before accessing content on the platform.

A user in the UK has shared a funny experience where Steam asked them to verify they are older than 18, despite having an account that is 19 years old. This change follows a recent law in the UK that mandates age verification for accessing games with mature content on Steam.

Since August 29, Steam has begun implementing age-verification measures in response to the UK Online Safety Act, passed in 2023. The verification system relies on the user’s credit card to confirm their age. Under-18 users will no longer have access to mature content and community hubs.

Interestingly, a Twitter user named Christina Tasty highlighted this amusing occurrence, noting that they needed to verify their age even when trying to access a game they already own. Other users chimed in, sharing their experiences of owning long-standing Steam accounts.

The implementation of the UK Online Safety Act has also coincided with the removal of certain adult games from Steam in compliance with payment processors like Visa and Mastercard.

Additionally, an earlier feature allowing some users to skip age warnings on mature content has been noted, although it was not available to everyone.
