Digital Purchases Dominate European Gaming Revenue in 2024

A significant shift in gaming purchases in Europe shows 90% of revenue derived from digital formats, with only 15% attributed to PC sales.

New research reveals that the European gaming landscape has shifted dramatically towards digital sales. According to the 2024 All About Video Games report by Video Games Europe, about 90% of total gaming revenue came from digital purchases in 2024, increasing by 5% from the previous year. This pattern signifies a substantial decline in physical game sales, which now represent a mere 10% of the market.

The report further illustrates that mobile gaming is surging, comprising 44% of revenue, while console gaming trails closely behind at 38%. PC gaming holds a modest 15% share of the total, reflecting a slight rise from 2023. Additionally, the percentage of gamers actively playing on PCs has dipped from 46% to 43% within the same timeframe.

In context, physical game purchases used to account for 20% of the European market as recently as 2020, indicating a rapid decline in interest over just four years, which could be due to either the growing preference for digital formats or a reduction in releases of physical titles.

The report highlights the top-selling games in Europe for the past year: Helldivers 2, Call of Duty Black Ops 6, and GTA 5, among others, marking a noteworthy year for digital sales.
