Battlefield 6's Secure Boot Requirement: A Necessary Evil?

The technical director of Battlefield 6 acknowledges the complications of the Secure Boot requirement but believes it's essential to combat cheating.

If you were hoping that Battlefield 6 would relax its Secure Boot mandate ahead of launch, it might be time to temper those expectations.

The studio responsible for Battlefield has reiterated its stance on the necessity of this BIOS-level setting, which some players have criticized as being incompatible with their hardware or requiring tedious steps just to access the game.

Pierre Bruhl, the technical director, expressed his sentiments about this in a recent PC Gamer interview:

“I’ll start by saying, man, I wish we didn’t have to turn on Secure Boot. I wish we could just play the game without someone cheating. However, a couple of years ago, we had many discussions about balancing ease of access with the need for a secure environment. Ultimately, we concluded that ensuring a fair and cheat-free gaming experience is our top priority.”

The Secure Boot requirement has stirred debate among fans, especially considering its implications for users interested in dual-booting systems.

“It’s unfortunate that there are hurdles with Secure Boot. While we aim to educate players about it, we decided that this trade-off was justifiable, especially as we observe similar trends within the industry,” Bruhl commented.

Thus far, Javelin, Battlefield 6’s anti-cheat software, has been effectively deployed in Battlefield 2042 and Battlefield 5, where Secure Boot is also a prerequisite. This anti-cheat tool is designed to actively monitor ongoing gameplay, scanning for cheating behaviors.

As such, players can expect Secure Boot to remain a critical part of the Battlefield 6 ecosystem, as developers strive to deliver a safe, cheat-free environment for all gamers.
