The recent changes to Overwatch 2’s Stadion mode have ignited significant discontent among fans. Players criticized the newly implemented MOBA-style draft system, particularly the ban on mirror matchups where both teams cannot use the same heroes.
After just 72 hours of backlash on platforms like Reddit and Twitter, Blizzard swiftly decided to revert the changes, allowing mirror matchups once again.
“We’re grateful to everyone who tried it out and shared feedback,” said Aaron Keller, the game director. “As a team, one of our goals is to create the game that you want to play. This necessitates listening, responding, and taking those desires into account.”
This shift was supposed to introduce strategic hero selection in a mode where character swapping was already disallowed, but it inadvertently discouraged players from participating altogether.
The initial aim of the draft system contrasted sharply with BOA games like League of Legends, which feature a large roster of heroes. In Stadium, with only 21 heroes available, such restrictions felt excessive.
Reddit user Pizzabro200 voiced a common sentiment: “We have six supports. SIX. You can lose access to half your role before you even get a turn.”
This return to previous settings reflects Blizzard’s commitment to adapt and innovate as they aim to meet player expectations in the ever-evolving landscape of competitive gaming.
