Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Developers Intend to Avoid Modern Gaming Instant Gratification

Developers at Warhorse Studios reflect on how they aim to recreate the immersive experience of classic RPGs in their upcoming title.

Warhorse Studios’ latest title, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, aims to recapture the spirit of classic RPGs without succumbing to the instant gratification prevalent in modern gaming.

The senior designer, Ondřej Bittner, noted that the development team, largely comprised of designers in their 30s and 40s, drew inspiration from well-regarded titles like Morrowind and Oblivion during the game’s creation. He mentioned, “I’m more of a Morrowind person… All of these games had a huge impact on us.”

Bittner expressed a commitment to returning to the game’s roots, stating that many modern games overwhelm players with constant stimuli. Instead, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will allow players the freedom to explore and engage with the game world at their own pace.

Bittner said, “We wanted to make mechanics more approachable, so that they’re hard, but not so hard that players don’t even know what to do.”

The development team is also keen to provide guidance in the game to assist players who might find the narrative less straightforward compared to titles that hold the player’s hand. They introduced Bara, a tutorial NPC intended to be a gentle guide for players uncertain about their next steps.

Ultimately, Deliverance 2 aspires to preserve the depth and complexity that made its predecessor a unique success, while also ensuring that players do not feel lost in its vast open world.
