New Rumors Suggest AMD is Working on a 16 GB RX 9070 GRE Graphics Card

AMD is reportedly developing a 16 GB version of its RX 9070 GRE GPU, potentially to compete with Nvidia's upcoming models.

Currently, only gamers in China can access AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 GRE, a highly anticipated graphics card that features 48 compute units and 12 GB of VRAM. However, rumors are circulating that AMD might be preparing to roll out a 16 GB variant to enhance its market stance against the expected launch of Nvidia’s RTX 50 Super series.

According to reports from IT Home (via X-user Ruby_Rapids), the update to the RX 9070 GRE will target increased memory capacity while aiming to fulfill market demands. This proposition could also imply a global release in the future to match Nvidia’s offerings effectively.

The current RX 9070 GRE boasts 12 GB of GDDR6 memory, while the RX 9070 XT on which it’s based, ups the ante with an additional 4 GB, featuring a full 256-bit memory bus and 64 compute units. However, the RX 9070 GRE operates at lower specifications due to its defective Navi 48 GPU limitations.

If this 16 GB version comes to fruition, it could pose a substantial competition to Nvidia’s expected models such as the RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti, particularly if AMD can deliver it at a more attractive price point.

As rumors continue to circulate, many are left wondering how this fits into AMD’s larger strategy. If successful, this could lead to a more robust presence in the mid-range graphics card sector for PC gamers globally.
