Protesters Take Over Microsoft President's Office Amid Rising Tensions Over Israeli Military Ties
The conflict surrounding Microsoft's collaborations with the Israeli military intensifies as protesters occupy the office of Brad Smith.
Less than a week after 18 activists from the group No Azure for Apartheid were arrested while demonstrating against Microsoft’s connections with the Israeli military, protesters conducted a sit-in within Microsoft President Brad Smith’s office. Consequently, Building 34 was locked down following the incident.
The activists managed to record two videos from inside the building, including one that appeared to show security attempting to remove them, though these were shortly deleted from Twitch.
During the sit-in, activists reportedly utilized noise-making devices attached to balloons and posted notices that stated, “The People’s Court Summons Bradford Lee Smith on Charges of Crimes Against Humanity.”
Current and former Microsoft employees supported the protest, gathering outside to hold a rally. They distributed documents titled: We will not be cogs in the Israeli genocidal machine: a call for a Worker Intifada. Additionally, an 18-foot scroll displaying signatures from over 2,000 individuals who have joined No Azure for Apartheid’s online petition was showcased.
The occupation marked a significant escalation from earlier protests that began this year when individual employees disrupted events like Microsoft’s 50th anniversary celebration. Microsoft has thus far declined to engage with the protesters despite the ongoing pressure for an end to its relations with the Israeli government.
