Vtuber Grandmas: Agency Offers Anime Girl Grandmas for Social Support

Japanese vtuber agency Otagroup introduces a service allowing people to rent vtuber grandmas, targeting both elder well-being and youth support.

Japanese vtuber agency Otagroup has ventured into an innovative service by offering virtual grandmothers aged 75 and above for hire. These vtuber grandmas aim to provide companionship and life advice, addressing the psychological and emotional needs of the elderly while simultaneously aiding younger generations facing urban challenges. A notable figure from this agency, the 86-year-old vtuber Hiroko, garnered popular attention on platforms such as X and YouTube, spurring the idea behind the ‘rental granny’ service.

The agency recognizes the substantial benefits of having a support system for elderly individuals, stating that interaction with caring figures contributes positively to their morale. “We realized that having someone who can rely on you greatly fosters well-being,” the agency explained. They intend to organize video calls and counseling sessions where clients can enjoy conversations with their vtuber grandmas.

This venture may evolve into a profitable business model, with Otagroup exploring partnerships with nursing facilities to expand their offerings, ensuring that elderly women can share their wisdom and support effectively through the anonymity provided by vtuber formats.

While the initiative has potential upsides, it also raises concerns regarding the ethical implications of utilizing elderly personas as virtual entertainers. Nevertheless, the general ethos centers around enhancing joy in people’s lives while providing a unique avenue for social support.
