Microsoft Introduces Copilot AI Functionality in Excel, Cautions Against Its Accuracy

Microsoft now allows users to utilize Copilot for generating Excel formulas but urges caution for tasks requiring precision.

Users of Windows 365 Copilot can now make use of a new feature in Excel that allows for the generation of formulas through AI assistance. However, caution is advised as Microsoft has warned that the tool may not provide consistently reliable results.

The new Copilot function enables users to bypass the manual creation of Excel formulas. By simply commanding Copilot with specific requests, users can generate helpful functions effortlessly. For example, entering ‘=COPILOT("Summarize this feedback", A2:A20)’ would engage Copilot to summarize data in a specified range. Microsoft suggests this function can be used to classify and summarize content efficiently.

Despite its advantages, Microsoft specifically advises against using this feature for tasks that necessitate accuracy, such as numerical computations or financial reporting, emphasizing it is not suitable for critical scenarios where precision is required.
