Roblox Players Discover Method to Evade Chat Filters
Players utilize the game Spray Paint! to bypass the newly implemented chat restrictions in Roblox, leading to the spread of hate speech.
A popular Roblox game has become a method for players to bypass the game’s chat filters. Roblox now has over 90 million daily active users, and the company strives to maintain a safe environment for everyone. However, despite each update aimed at improving safety, some players continuously find ways to sidestep the rules.
In May, Roblox replaced its Legacy Chat Service with the Text Chat Service to align with new parental control measures, enhancing safety for younger users. Although this change complicates the operation of older games, it effectively limits the spread of hateful content.
Spray Paint Game Allows Chat Filter Bypass
A recent CBS News report revealed that a well-known Roblox game titled Spray Paint! has become a hub for hateful speech. Set in a virtual skate park, players use graffiti to decorate walls, which has attracted a community of artists but unfortunately also led to the proliferation of derogatory images and messages, including offensive symbols and remarks against minority groups.
The CBS investigation compounds Roblox’s already troubled reputation. The state of Louisiana is pursuing legal action against Roblox for allegedly failing to protect youths from predatory behavior. The recent findings of hate speech in the game may intensify these lawsuits. Roblox affirmed the existence of a human review team to assess reported content and encourages users to report any inappropriate images.
In November, Roblox implemented additional restrictions to safeguard minors in the game. Titles rated above Mild are now unsuitable for players under nine years of age, though there remains a parental consent option for access to Moderate-rated games like Spray Paint!, which permits players aged thirteen and older to play without consent.
Despite setbacks, Roblox still manages to shine in challenging times, with Grow a Garden surpassing Fortnite in player counts in July, solidifying its standing as Roblox’s most beloved game to date, benefitting from fresh content additions that draw in new players daily.
