Dungeons and Dragons Teases Return of an Iconic Setting
The latest Unearthed Arcana for Dungeons and Dragons may hint at a return for the beloved Dark Sun setting, which hasn't seen new content in over a decade.
Dungeons and Dragons has recently unveiled a fresh Unearthed Arcana titled Apocalyptic Subclasses, igniting speculation among fans about the potential return of the Dark Sun setting. Despite being absent from the game for 15 years, this playtest document might indicate a shift.
D&D’s Apocalyptic Subclasses Could Be Teasing Dark Sun
The new Unearthed Arcana introduces four apocalypse-themed subclasses for playtesting: the Circle of Preservation Druid, Gladiator Fighter, Defiled Sorcerer, and Sorcerer-King Warlock. Each subclass embodies the grim themes that align with the Dark Sun aesthetic, leading many to speculate on the development of a new sourcebook.
However, the Dark Sun setting prompts caution due to its sensitive themes, including slavery and genocide. While Wizards of the Coast hasn’t ruled it out entirely, any revival would need to modernize these elements to fit today’s ethical standards.
In summary, while no announcement has been made for 2025, it’s conceivable that these subclasses could find a place in an upcoming Dark Sun project, or in a different post-apocalyptic themed sourcebook.
