BlackMill Games has been developing World War 1-themed shooters for more than ten years, starting with Verdun, and continuing with Tannenberg and Isonzo. Their upcoming title, Gallipoli, aims to bring the focus to the Middle Eastern theatre, dramatizing the intense battles between the Triple Entente and the Ottoman Empire.
The Gallipoli campaign, while not as famous as some other WW1 episodes, marked a particularly bloody engagement, leading to the loss of over ten thousand soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. This campaign is remembered annually on ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand.
Notably, the only other modern gaming representation of this campaign comes from the Battlefield 1 mission The Runner, which seems to borrow heavily from Peter Weir’s 1981 film Gallipoli.
The move eastward wants to offer players a more varied experience, navigating through coastal dunes, dry deserts, urban settings, and more. In addition to the Gallipoli narrative, the game will take players into the Mesopotamian front, reaching towards what is now Iraq, allowing players to side with either the Ottoman Empire or the British forces.
Like its predecessors, Gallipoli promises to be a squad-focused shooter, emphasizing the importance of class selection. If a player chooses to play as a stretcher bearer, they are advised against rushing across no man’s land to bolster their kill/death ratio. Public matches will feature AI bots to enhance the grand scale of the battles, although players can disable them in custom games.
Gallipoli is expected to launch on Steam sometime in 2026. You can check out the reveal trailer below.
