The developer of Ghostrunner, One More Level, has announced their new first-person soulslike game titled Valor Mortis. This game was revealed during the opening of Gamescom 2025 and is set to reimagine the Napoleonic Wars through a dark fantasy lens, combining historical fiction with terrifying supernatural elements.
A Soulslike Wrought in Horror and History
On August 19, the studio showcased a two-and-a-half-minute trailer at Gamescom 2025 Opening Night Live. The trailer highlights the game’s unique setting: early 19th-century Eastern Europe amidst Napoleon’s tumultuous campaigns. Players will take on the role of William, a soldier of the French Imperial Army who dies in battle and mysteriously returns to life.
As William navigates a plague-ridden world infused with terrifying monsters, he must harness the effects of a mysterious substance known as Nephtoglobin. The game’s title, valor mortis, translates from Latin to “the bravery of death” or “death’s courage.”
“After Ghostrunner, we knew we had the foundation to create a first-person perspective game, but this time in a soulslike genre,” said Szymon Bryla, CEO of One More Level. Despite the genre shift, the studio remains committed to delivering intense gameplay experiences.
Valor Mortis aims to offer a new spin on the soulslike genre, with a focus on precision and methodical gameplay rather than the fast-paced action characteristic of their previous titles. Slated for a 2026 release on PC and current-gen consoles (excluding Nintendo systems), the game will be published by Lyrical Games.
