McDonald's Takes Firm Steps to Combat Pokémon Card Scalping

In response to scalpers draining supplies of Pokémon-themed Happy Meals, McDonald's has introduced new purchasing limits to ensure fair access for all customers.

McDonald’s has recently announced new rules aimed at fighting scalpers for the next wave of its Pokémon-themed Happy Meals in Japan. This decision is a response to the overwhelming demand that caused the fast food chain to exhaust its supply of Pokémon cards quickly, just after the promotion launched.

Earlier this year, McDonald’s collaborated with Pokémon to offer eight exclusive toys and six promotional Pokémon TCG cards. The collection included enticing characters like Pikachu and Lucario. However, scalpers dominated the market, purchasing multiple Happy Meals to secure the exclusive cards, which led to protests from disappointed fans.

Following backlash, the company issued an apology and detailed new restrictions. Starting August 17, customers can only buy three Happy Meals at a time, and orders of four or more will be canceled to avoid premature stock depletion. Additionally, restrictions may apply at certain locations during specific hours.

Although Pokémon toys will still be available, the exclusive Pokémon cards, particularly the highly sought-after Pikachu version, are now likely available online at marked-up prices, with eBay listings reaching up to $1,000 for bundles.

McDonald’s aims to better prepare for future promotions and mitigate scalping issues in the product launches of popular franchises like Pokémon.
