David Hayter Reflects on Playing Metal Gear Solid 5 After Years of Reluctance

David Hayter, the original voice of Snake, shares his thoughts on finally playing Metal Gear Solid 5, a game he once anticipated would be '60 hours of humiliation.'

Metal Gear Solid 5, released nearly a decade ago, still ignites discussions around its legacy, especially regarding Hideo Kojima’s relationship with Konami. One key topic has been the transition away from David Hayter as the voice of Snake in favor of Kiefer Sutherland. In a recent chat with PC Gamer, Hayter shared his reflections on finally playing the game he once dubbed “60 hours of humiliation.” After a long period of hesitation, impacted by the game’s backstory, Hayter ultimately decided to try it out. “I thought it would hurt my feelings. Ten years later, I thought, ‘ah, to hell with my feelings,’ and just dove in,” said Hayter. His experience was unexpectedly positive, declaring that it might just be his favorite gameplay in the series. Hayter has also reconciled with Sutherland, enjoying a friendly encounter years later, stating, “No ill will. All is forgiven.” This shift reflects the larger changes happening at Konami as they re-engage with the Metal Gear franchise.
