League of Legends Introduces Major Control Change After 16 Years

Riot Games is adding a new control option for League of Legends aimed at making gameplay more accessible for newcomers.

After nearly 16 years of relying on the traditional point-and-click method, League of Legends is set to implement a new control scheme allowing players to move using WASD keys.

In a video that elaborates on this upcoming change, Paul Bellezza, the Executive Producer at Riot Games, expressed that the prior movement mechanics often deter new and returning players. He stated, > “We found that a lot of new or returning players struggle a lot with League’s controls early on. Click to move just isn’t the sort of control scheme they’re used to, and it puts a lot of people off including many that we believe would otherwise really love the game.”

Bellezza assures that introducing the WASD movement can help expedite the journey for newcomers into the engaging sections of League, promising a smoother gameplay experience without sacrificing the game’s core essence.

The new control scheme aims to be tested widely before fully launching, with in-game trials scheduled to begin shortly, ensuring that it will not disrupt existing gameplay dynamics. This initiative is aimed at striking a balance where both the traditional mouse controls and the new WASD method can co-exist, catering to different player preferences.

As gaming communities continue to debate the implementation, the introduction of this feature is highly anticipated, and players are keen to see how it reshapes the engagement experience.
