Mark Darrah Suggests Remasters as the Key to Dragon Age's Future Amid Concerns for BioWare

Former BioWare producer Mark Darrah advocates for remasters of the original Dragon Age series as the only viable path forward for its future, while expressing skepticism about BioWare's current capability to deliver.

In a recent interview, Mark Darrah, formerly a producer at BioWare, discussed the history of potential remasters for the Dragon Age series, indicating that a remaster of the initial three games might be the best chance for the series to continue. Darrah pointed out the considerable obstacles that such a project would encounter, especially in comparison to the successful Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

“I’m not sure who pitches that game within EA, that’s what it would come down to,” Darrah remarked, highlighting the need for an advocate at BioWare or EA to propose a new Dragon Age project.

Darrah also conveyed uncertainty about how future development might proceed, emphasizing that the first three Dragon Age games deserve a remaster but were never formally pitched due to fears about internal responses and resourcing challenges.

He managed to convey that although many gaming ideas are floated around the studio, the ongoing friction over priorities between teams, particularly between the Dragon Age and Mass Effect groups, often leaves such ideas unaddressed.

Furthermore, he remarked on EA’s historical reluctance toward remastering older games, though this stance has begun to shift post the successful remasters.

As Dragon Age continues to grapple with its identity amidst high turnover at BioWare, Darrah’s insights suggest a need for revitalization strategies within the franchise. However, he concluded with a sobering acknowledgment that despite the potential, the likelihood of a Dragon Age revival remained ambiguous.

With the considerable changes at BioWare and the challenges faced by the studio, Darrah asserted, “Dragon Age is just dead, at least until Microsoft-acquired EA announces their reboot of the series.”
