Burglars Make Off with $30,000 in Labubu Dolls
A resale store in La Puente, California, was broken into, leading to a significant loss of collectible Labubu figurines.
The owners of a resale shop in La Puente, California, are seeking assistance in identifying four young individuals believed to have broken into their store and stolen around $30,000 worth of Labubu dolls. Security footage from the incident shows the suspects masked and dressed in hoodies to hide their identities.
Originally launched in 2015, Labubu figures stem from a brand known as “The Monsters”, produced by China-based Pop Mart since 2019. Labubu was designed by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, inspired by Nordic mythology, and became especially popular in 2024 when Lisa from the K-pop band Blackpink was spotted with a Labubu keychain.
On August 6, at approximately 1:30 AM Pacific Time, the One Stop Sales store was targeted, resulting in substantial losses of the valuable dolls. Owner Joanna Avendano reported that the thieves focused solely on the Labubu dolls, leaving other merchandise untouched. Although some stolen items were recovered shortly after, the investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department continues, and no arrests have been made so far.
The allure of Labubu collectibles has led to a thriving resale market, which has also drawn the attention of thieves. Similar incidents of thefts targeted at collectibles like Pokemon cards have been noted, emphasizing an alarming trend in crime associated with high-profile items.
