Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon took to Twitter to engage fans on how to enhance the game’s balance.
Mortal Kombat 1 has recently been recognized as the top-selling fighting game of its generation, having surpassed 6 million units sold. Despite this success, major support for the game has officially concluded just 20 months after its launch. This period saw it outpace competitors like Street Fighter 6, which has achieved about 5 million sales, and Tekken 8, which reached the 3 million mark.
Boon stated that despite the end of significant support, they remain dedicated to balancing the game for optimal playability.
“With over 6.2 million games sold, we’re still committed to refining MK1 to be our most balanced game.”
This dedication comes after a long-standing trend where NetherRealm typically transitions away from ongoing game support around a year after launching. In contrast, Mortal Kombat 11 managed to receive support for two years before the team shifted focus to a new project. However, community reactions have shown disappointment with what many perceived as a shorter support window compared to previous entries.
As discussions continue about the game’s future, Boon has solicited player feedback on which fighters might require buffs and whether smaller, more frequent DLC packs are preferable over larger, less frequent batches.
