Take-Two's Focus on Quality Delays BioShock 4
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick assures that BioShock 4 is still in development despite facing challenges and delays, emphasizing the commitment to high-quality gaming experiences.
Despite facing significant setbacks in its development, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, has expressed confidence that BioShock 4 will not be cancelled. In recent communications, Zelnick remarked that the game will indeed release, stating, ‘It’s going to come out. That I can say hand on heart, without question.’
The development trajectory for BioShock 4 has seen its share of challenges, including recent staff changes that raised concerns about the timeline. Notably, studio head Kelley Gilmore has been replaced, and the creative director, Hogarth de la Plante, will now take on a different role within the company. Zelnick admitted, ‘we have had some ups and downs along the way’ but maintained that the new team at Cloud Chamber has significant expectations to meet, given the franchise’s rich legacy established by Ken Levine.
Zelnick emphasizes the importance of quality over speed in game design, stating, ‘consumers are not okay with okay.’ This perspective reflects a growing trend in the gaming industry where developers need to balance ambitious project goals with the high expectations of modern gamers. He pointed out that while they aim to produce exceptional entertainment, sometimes this ambition can lead to extended production times.
This commitment to quality is expected to help ensure that BioShock 4 aligns with the high standards that fans have come to expect from the series. Zelnick concluded by acknowledging the challenges of big-budget game development in an environment where consumers demand nothing less than excellence.
