Five Years Later, This PS2 Classic Still Faces Issues on PS5

The PS2 RPG 'Okage: Shadow King' continues to have technical issues on PS5, despite being re-released on modern platforms years ago.

Years after its modern release, the PlayStation 2 RPG Okage: Shadow King still faces unresolved technical problems on the PS5. These issues, first reported in 2020, persist for PS5 players wishing to experience the game.

Okage: Shadow King

Originally re-released as a PS2 classic for PS4 in 2016, Okage: Shadow King included trophy support and enhanced visuals, but remained fundamentally the same game running through emulation. On PS5, backward compatibility was expected to improve loading times and performance, yet not everything functioned smoothly.

Technical Glitches Still Present

Although players see better frame rates and 1080p resolution, many reported visual issues on PS5, such as flickering textures, missing items, and color distortions. Notable glitches frequently occur during the Okage: Shadow King title screen or during certain scenes in the game, leaving characters looking partially transparent or improperly shaded without crashing the game.

Fighting In Okage: Shadow King

Even Sony acknowledges these persistent problems in the PlayStation Store listing for Okage: Shadow King, cautioning that “this game may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5.” Nevertheless, since its PS4 and PS5 launch, no updates or patches have been provided, leaving players frustrated with ongoing issues.

Okage: Shadow King may run at a stable 60 FPS, but its visual flaws considerably detract from the gameplay experience, hindering the RPG’s potential success in modern gaming. The game, known for its unique visuals and dark humor, has a nostalgic value for many but struggles to gain new appreciation due to these unaddressed glitches.
