Microsoft Discontinues Windows 11 SE: Schools Face Urgent Transition

Microsoft's recent decision to discontinue Windows 11 SE offers educational institutions a little over a year to find suitable alternatives, raising concerns among IT professionals regarding the transition.

Four years ago, Microsoft introduced Windows 11 SE, tailored for education with a focus on web-first devices. However, its lack of popularity among students and IT staff is leading some to welcome the announcement that October 2026 marks the end of support for this OS. Microsoft advises users to transition to devices that can run other editions of Windows 11 for continued support and security.

The limitations of Windows 11 SE, which primarily restricted non-educational applications, led to challenges for IT technicians who had to navigate its difficulties. As no immediate replacements exist in Microsoft’s plans, educators face critical choices moving forward.

Notably, devices running Windows 11 SE will cease receiving updates and support shortly, essentially leaving educational institutions with limited options. Safety concerns arise from potential security vulnerabilities as the operating system falls out of support, emphasizing the need for a viable transition plan.
