The Nintendo Switch 2 has added five new titles to its backwards-compatible game list following a recent system update. Backwards compatibility continues to be a significant feature for the Switch 2, designed to allow players access to a wide array of games from the previous generation. This growing list aims to enhance the gaming experience for players.
In an announcement made earlier this year, Nintendo detailed the Switch 2’s backwards compatibility capabilities, confirming support for both physical and digital copies of games originally designed for the first Switch console, although certain games might not be supported. Following its launch on June 5, 2025, which included a variety of compatible titles, a mid-July update improved access to an additional 25 games such as the online adventure title Sky: Children of the Light and the puzzle platformer Portal 2.
Newly Compatible Titles
- Cotton Reboot High Tension
- D.C.III: Da Capo III – Plus Story
- DarkStar One: Nintendo Switch Edition
- Disgaea 7
- Vagante
The Switch 20.3.0 update, released on July 28, introduced various stability enhancements for both the original Switch and the Switch 2, while also optimizing the new console’s HDR settings. This update came with the resounding addition of five more titles that can now function effectively on the Switch 2, with well-known names such as DarkStar One: Nintendo Switch Edition, Disgaea 7, and Vagante joining the mix, according to a report from Nintendo Everything. Although the list is not as extensive as previous updates, it includes many exclusive titles beneficial for Western players.
Among these new titles, Disgaea 7, a tactical RPG released in 2023, stands out, providing similarities with Atlus’ Persona series through its anime-inspired graphics and mythical themes, alongside gameplay reminiscent of Final Fantasy Tactics. Also newly included are Vagante, an action platformer, and the remastered space simulation game DarkStar One, which was re-released for the Switch in June 2024.
Backwards compatibility has proven crucial for early adopters of the Switch 2, especially as some may feel the launch library was lacking. Since the console’s introduction, titles such as Donkey Kong Bananza have received high praise, and fans have numerous exciting releases to anticipate, including Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Octopath Traveler 0, and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds laid out for the remainder of the year.
