Survey Reveals UK Citizens Mixed on New Age Verification Laws

A recent survey shows that while nearly 70% of Brits support the new age verification legislation, many doubt its effectiveness in preventing underage access to adult content.

It has been a week since the UK government enforced its Online Safety Act, which mandates age verification to access adult content. Two surveys conducted by a research group reveal that while a significant number of British citizens support the new legislation, there are concerns regarding its effectiveness.

According to a YouGov report, almost 4,400 adults were surveyed. When asked about the legislation, nearly 70% expressed support, but 64% of respondents felt it would not effectively prevent those under 18 from accessing pornography.

The idiom ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ aptly describes the UK government’s efforts to stop minors from accessing adult materials. While the intent is to enhance safety, many methods currently employed are easily circumvented.

Additionally, the reliance on private companies for age verification raises concerns over data privacy and security, further complicating the implementation of these new rules.

The overall sentiment reveals that whether or not the laws will genuinely protect children remains uncertain.
