It’s been six years since 2K Games announced that BioShock 4 was undergoing development at the newly established Cloud Chamber studio. Despite the passage of time, challenges remain. A recent report from Bloomberg indicates that the game has failed to meet the approval of 2K executives, resulting in significant leadership changes. The studio head Kelley Gilmore has been removed, with Hogarth de la Plante shifting from creative director to a publishing role, hinting at a necessary overhaul of parts of the game.
2K Games commented on these leadership changes, assuring fans of their commitment, stating, “We are working hard to set BioShock up for the best possible future. Currently, we have a good game, but we aim to deliver a great one.”
Furthermore, the report highlighted that some employees at Cloud Chamber have voiced concerns over possible layoffs due to the need for agility within the studio. The narrative aspect of BioShock 4 has emerged as a point of concern, with implications that the team must deliver a deeply impactful storytelling experience in line with the franchise’s legacy.
To compound the disappointment for long-time followers of the series, Bloomberg also revealed that a planned remake of the original BioShock has been scrapped earlier this year. No official reason for its cancellation has been provided.
