Co-Op Games Are Taking Over the Steam Marketplace in 2025

A detailed look at how co-op games have captured significant revenue and dominate the sales charts on Steam.

Co-op games are achieving unprecedented success on Steam, with co-op titles generating remarkable revenue and leading the sales charts in 2025. A recent analysis indicates that Steam users are enthusiastic about games they can enjoy with friends.

While Steam is a widely used platform, it offers features that enhance multiplayer experiences. There’s no cost for online play, and Steam features like Remote Play Together enable users to share a single game copy among multiple players. Additionally, the platform’s extensive library of indie games appears to help explain this trend in co-op gaming.

Estimates reveal that Steam has generated $4.1 billion from co-op games during the first half of 2025, reflecting an 11% increase from the same timeframe last year. Co-op titles have predominated the top five sellers on Steam. Notably, REPO has sold a staggering 16.4 million copies, followed by Schedule 1 (9 million), Peak (7 million), Monster Hunter Wilds (6.3 million), and Elden Ring Nightreign (2.8 million). The top-revenue games were also co-op titles, led by Monster Hunter Wilds generating $380.8 million, followed by Schedule 1 with $137 million, REPO with $128.2 million, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 with $109.1 million, and Split Fiction at $104.5 million.

Steam Co-Op Games See Significant Growth

An analysis of sales growth reveals an impressive rise in co-op game revenues over the years. For example, in the first half of 2018, co-op games contributed $1.25 billion to Steam’s earnings. Steady growth continued until the first half of 2020, which saw revenues surpass $1.5 billion. By the end of 2020, this figure increased to over $2 billion, and reached $2.5 billion by the first half of 2021. A surge in notable releases, including games like Phasmophobia, Valheim, It Takes Two, Lethal Company, Baldur’s Gate 3, Helldivers 2, and REPO, significantly boosted these figures.

Remarkably, many co-op titles orchestrating these impressive earnings are not AAA games but often indie or AA releases. Such games, typically available at lower prices, make entry into multiplayer experiences easier—as evidenced by the sustained interest in acquiring games on Steam. While these trends can evolve, co-op gaming seems poised to keep flourishing on the platform for the foreseeable future.
