Nintendo Launches Latest Update for Switch 2 in July 2025

Nintendo's fresh 20.3.0 update for the Switch and Switch 2 is now live, enhancing system stability without major additions.

The 20.3.0 OS update for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 is now out for download. Although it does not bring significant features, this update reportedly resets at least one user-facing Switch 2 setting.

With the latest console being a minor upgrade over its predecessor, it operates on the same system software. Officially titled Nintendo Switch System Software and code-named Horizon, this OS has undergone several revisions since the Switch 2 was released on June 5.

Continuing a recent pattern, another Switch OS update was rolled out on July 28, now available for the two most recent generations of Nintendo consoles. Marked with version number 20.3.0, the patch comes with a changelog that discloses just one item: system stability enhancements. Nintendo has provided no further clarifications, merely stating that the modifications aim to improve the user experience for both the Switch and Switch 2.

New Switch 2 Update Reportedly Changes HDR Settings

Early social media reactions suggest that the July 28 OS update may include undocumented changes. Users report that their Switch 2 HDR settings appear altered post-installation, leading to mixed opinions on whether this has improved or degraded image quality. If users believe the console now processes HDR output less effectively while docked, they can recalibrate it by accessing System Settings, navigating to the Display tab, and selecting the Adjust HDR option at the bottom. This enables manual color balance tweaks when the Switch 2 outputs an HDR image to a compatible display.

Situated right above that option in the Display interface is an HDR Output dropdown. Most Switch 2 users should set this to Compatible Software Only rather than enabling it for all games. The default configuration may cause washed-out, overexposed, or otherwise unsatisfactory colors in older titles not designed for high dynamic range.

The 20.3.0 update constitutes the second Switch OS revision for July 2025 and the fourth update since Nintendo’s latest console debuted in early June. The preceding Switch 2 update was designated version number 20.2.0, which reportedly reset the brightness setting slider. However, this change seems to have been unintentional or the outcome of an underlying adjustment that wasn’t addressed in the latest patch, as updates to 20.3.0 do not impact the brightness slider, according to Game Rant’s testing. Following Nintendo’s recent update timetable, additional Switch 2 updates are expected before 2025 draws to a close.
