AMD's Strix Halo Chip Powers New Handheld Gaming PC

The GPD Win 5 harnesses AMD's powerful Strix Halo chip, addressing the challenges of power consumption and performance.

Groundbreaking Performance with AMD’s Strix Halo

GPD has unveiled the GPD Win 5, featuring the powerful AMD Strix Halo chip, which is renowned for its high CPU performance. Despite concerns about its power consumption and cost impacting its feasibility in handhelds, GPD has successfully integrated it into this device. However, buyers should note that this handheld does not come with a built-in battery.

Instead, it supports an external battery, which can be mounted in a backpack, providing up to 2 hours of intensive gaming. The external battery option, while innovative, may feel cumbersome compared to conventional handheld devices that are designed for on-the-go gaming.

Users have the option to plug the GPD Win 5 directly into a power source while gaming, which could work well in cafes or other public spaces.

“The Win 5’s design brings up the challenge of portability, akin to carrying a laptop but without the added screen size and keyboard.”

This device is expected to debut at Chinajoy 2025 in Shanghai, with a launch planned for October 2025. The specific markets for release are yet to be announced.
