Éalú, developed by the first-time team Beyond the Bark, boasts a compelling premise: You are a mechanical mouse navigating a mysterious labyrinth. However, its visual appeal truly captivates; the game features exquisite stop-motion animation, crafted entirely from wood.
Unlike traditional models, every frame was meticulously recorded in physical sets. The game’s intricate settings were constructed in a backyard shed in Ireland, sharply contrasting with more common digital sprites.
“Every character, set, and movement was animated by hand by a single animator (myself),” said designer Ivan Owen. “There is no sprite for the main character—a clockwork mouse. Instead, I animated the mouse in situ in over 70 physical sets, resulting in 512 animation clips to create the experience.”
Your mouse character is not just adorable but also animated to portray various reactions as it journeys through the game. It must also navigate hazardous traps, like a kitchen knife that can abruptly end its adventure.
Éalú is marked by its stunning, unique flair and a melancholic atmosphere, inviting players to interact while solving puzzles—some of which provide a mental challenge reminiscent of labyrinthine puzzlers.
