Wireless charging is a technology that has gradually gained popularity, and its convenience is becoming increasingly desired. Recently, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced an updated Qi specification that effectively doubles charging speeds.
The new Qi2 specification is set to allow charging speeds up to 25 W, compared to the current maximum of 15 W. Given that the older Qi specification still feels relatively new, widespread adoption of the upgraded standard may take about a year.
Notably, adopting the new Qi2 standard will enhance fast charging, which is essential for modern devices, and could lead to quicker wireless charging for various peripherals, especially in PC gaming. The industry is hopeful that this advance will promote the adoption of faster wireless charging technologies, making it a game-changer for device charging in the near future.
“Prior to Qi2, several smartphone manufacturers had developed their own proprietary fast charging protocols. However, devices using these protocols may lack interoperability and consistent charge times. Qi2 25W is the first standard to enable truly high-speed Qi Certified wireless charging.”
Let’s hope that subsequent device releases incorporate this new standard to improve wireless charging experiences.
