Brutal Legend Free for a Limited Time in Memory of Ozzy Osbourne

Double Fine has made the cult-classic game Brutal Legend free for a short duration as a tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne.

In honor of the late Ozzy Osbourne, Double Fine made the cult-classic game Brutal Legend free on Itch.io for 666 minutes. Originally released in 2009, Brutal Legend featured NPC cameos from heavy metal musicians including Osbourne and is known for its eclectic gameplay mechanics that blend genres.

On July 22, John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne passed away at age 76, shortly after he rejoined Black Sabbath for a benefit concert in Birmingham, England. Renowned as one of the greatest heavy metal musicians, Osbourne is famous for hits like “Crazy Train” and “Paranoid,” and became a prominent figure through the MTV show The Osbournes. He also appeared in promotional material for games such as World of Warcraft.

In a statement on social media, Double Fine announced that Brutal Legend would be made available for free for a brief period—only 666 minutes—until 6:06 AM Eastern Time on July 24. To download the game, users need to create or log into a free account on itch.io, where they can obtain a 7.6 GB ZIP file without any digital rights management (DRM).

Despite being initially a console-exclusive, the PC version of Brutal Legend launched in 2013, featuring enhancements like anti-aliasing. Inspired by the director’s musical background, the game immerses players in a fantastical universe influenced by classic heavy metal album art.

“To honor Ozzy’s larger-than-life rock and roll legacy, we’re making Brütal Legend FREE on itch.io: doublefine.itch.io/brutal-legend But this incredible deal will only last for 666 minutes, as the prophecy foretold. So get yourself clicking, before it disappears like a demon in the night… 🤘 🖤” — From Double Fine’s official announcement.

Brutal Legend also features the character The Guardian of Metal, voiced by Osbourne, who assists the main character, Eddie Riggs, with upgrades for his weapons. The title is often celebrated for its unique blend of open-world adventure and real-time strategy gameplay, integrating musical elements reminiscent of Guitar Hero.

As of now, fans have just under nine hours to secure a copy of the beloved 2009 title before the limited-time offer expires. With Double Fine currently engaged in new projects, future developments from the studio remain to be seen.
