1047 Games has announced that it will pause the troubled FPS Splitgate 2 and revert it back to beta, while laying off an unspecified number of employees. This decision follows the game’s launch just two months ago on June 6, 2025.
The company’s co-founders, Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian, acknowledged the feedback from players, stating: “We’ve heard your feedback and we agree with you: we launched too early. We had ambitious goals with Splitgate 2, and in our excitement to share it with you, we bit off more than we could chew. We rushed certain features, made some boneheaded mistakes, and most importantly – we didn’t give you the polished, portal-filled mayhem you fell in love with.”
One notable misstep the co-founders pointed out was Ian Proulx’s appearance at the Summer Game Fest, during which he unveiled Splitgate 2’s new battle royale mode while wearing a controversial MAGA-style hat boasting the slogan “Make FPS Great Again.” He emphasized that the hat wasn’t intended to be a political statement, amidst mixed reactions from the community.
In light of the challenges, 1047 Games is also turning off the servers for the original Splitgate next month to focus its resources on the sequel. The developers are expected to restructure and return with enhanced gameplay features, improved monetization strategies, and a bigger focus on classic game modes that players have requested.
“This game means everything to us – it’s been our life for almost 10 years, we’re more committed than ever to delivering the incredible experience you deserve,” they stated, expressing hope to bring back soon-to-be-laid-off employees when the circumstances allow.
