Petition Against Game Shutdowns Hits New Milestone
The Stop Killing Games petition has surpassed 1.4 million signatures, gaining notable support in the gaming community.
The Stop Killing Games petition has officially gathered 1.4 million signatures, much more than the 1 million needed to bring the issue to light. This petition initially hit its target on July 3. Support has spiked, with even the Vice President of the European Parliament signing on, showcasing a broad backing for the movement on social platforms.
Despite this, the initiative faces backlash from certain industry veterans, particularly from the co-founder of Ubisoft. Yves Guillemot, the current CEO of Ubisoft, shared his concerns, stating that game publishers cannot be expected to keep services perpetually active, as “at some point, the service may be discontinued.” This viewpoint does not tackle the challenge of players losing access to their purchased games but reflects a wider sentiment among various industry experts, including those at Video Games Europe, a European publisher group.
As of July 21, 2023, the Stop Killing Games petition stands at 1,408,760 signatures, prompting organizers to extend their goal. Gamers in the EU can still sign until the deadline of July 31. Industry actions, such as EA’s shutdown of numerous online titles, further emphasize the frustration felt by gamers regarding game accessibility. The petition aims to encourage legal reforms to prevent such game delistings, though no official steps have been announced yet.
