More Than 100 Games Will Be Removed from the PlayStation Store
Japanese publisher Entergram plans to delist over 100 games from the PlayStation Store, affecting PS4 and PS Vita titles.
Japanese publisher Entergram has announced plans to delist over 100 PS4 and PS Vita games from the Japanese PlayStation Store later this year. The PlayStation Store features a wide array of games, from blockbuster AAA titles to numerous indie and smaller studio releases. It has been Sony’s primary platform for digital game sales since its inception on the PlayStation 3 in 2006.
However, the availability can differ significantly by region. The Japanese PlayStation Store is known for housing games exclusive to the region, with many developers opting not to distribute their titles globally. Additionally, pricing strategies can vary regionally, leading to recent backlash against Sony for raising prices in Brazil and Turkey.
Entergram has officially confirmed it will be removing 106 games from the PlayStation Store on September 30, indicating that it is ending sales for this selection. Notably, these games are exclusively for the Japanese store and won’t be available outside of Japan.
Although this mass removal may not directly impact gamers outside of Japan, it still represents a loss of many titles for digital purchase. The preservation of video games has been a prevalent topic among gaming communities, as mass delistings often lead to the disappearance of less popular titles. This growing concern is exemplified by initiatives like the recent Stop Killing Games petition, which has garnered over a million signatures.
Entergram’s decision comes in light of significant PlayStation releases in recent months. For instance, Forza Horizon 5 has recently become the first game from this once Xbox-exclusive franchise to launch on a PlayStation console, achieving rapid success on the PS5. Rumors suggest further Xbox titles, possibly including a Halo game, may soon appear on PlayStation, highlighting the shifting landscape of gaming platforms.
