Look away.
The recently released Off The Grid, an NFT-powered battle royale game, has captured attention not for its gameplay but for its controversial character skins released on day one. Players can opt for a character model known as the “PC gamer set,” which is designed as a heavy-set man with a neckbeard, along with a keyboard and mouse strapped to his chest, featuring a sticker referencing a meme from 2007.
For those willing to spend, the game offers character skins featuring political figures:
- Donald Trump with a “Stop Woke” sticker.
- Kamala Harris adorned with a “Legalize It” sticker.
The Trump skin is currently priced at an exorbitant 3,600 GUN (the game’s currency), while the Kamala skin is notably cheaper, priced at nearly $200 in real-world currency. This has ignited discussions online about the ethics of using real people, especially political figures, in video game cosmetic items, especially given the current climate around NFTs and microtransactions in games.
