Developer Input on 007 First Light Emphasizes Character Integrity

IO Interactive reveals MGM's request for a non-lethal portrayal of James Bond in the upcoming game.

IO Interactive has shared that MGM Studios had one specific guideline concerning the upcoming 007 First Light game: refrain from depicting James Bond as a soldier known for killing indiscriminately. While this guideline slightly influenced the game’s creative direction, it didn’t restrict IO Interactive from pursuing ideas that actually resonated with them.

Originally announced as Project 007 in 2020, the game received a proper unveiling in June 2025, confirming its title and some gameplay footage. Although MGM approved the project before handing over the James Bond license, details of their collaborative process remain sparse.

In an interview with VGC, Jonathan Lacaille explained that MGM maintained a rather flexible viewpoint, calling for a non-lethal presentation of the iconic character but otherwise exercising minimal creative control. “Our focus was not on creating just another shooting game, which made their request easy to follow,” he noted.

Not All Concepts Were Welcomed

While MGM’s demands were sparse, they occasionally provided feedback that shaped the project. Lacaille mentioned that even when there was pushback, it was generally constructive: “It was never a hard ’no’ but a suggestion of an alternative path.”

As the game progresses, it will portray an original storyline about how James Bond attained his double-o designation, introducing 009 as the main antagonist. Anticipated features include elements of stealth and driving, revitalizing older missions with modifiers for additional gameplay.Various adaptations are planned for a projected launch in 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
