Nintendo Suspended a Switch 2 Player Over Used Games, Reinstated After Proof of Purchase

A Switch 2 player faced a ban for using second-hand games, later reinstated by Nintendo upon proof of purchase.

In an unfortunate event for one Switch 2 owner, they were banned by Nintendo for utilizing second-hand games, which were later found to be likely pirated, although the user was not aware of this. The affected user, identified as dmanthey on Reddit, purchased some used Switch 1 games from Facebook Marketplace and proceeded to play them on their new console.

Afterward, dmanthey faced a ban from the online services of their Switch 2 the following day with a restriction message from Nintendo, prohibiting access to download games that they had already owned legitimately. Fortunately, Nintendo’s customer support was efficient in processing the issue, and the ban was lifted upon dmanthey presenting proof of purchase for the used games.

This case serves as a cautionary tale for others who may intend to use pre-owned titles on their new consoles. With Nintendo being particularly stringent in enforcing copyright laws and intellectual property rights, buyers of used games should remain vigilant about potential repercussions. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, having proof of purchase may be your best chance of reclamation.
