Misidentified Issues: The Truth Behind RTX 50-Series Graphics Cards and Power Connectors

Recent claims about RTX 50-series graphics cards melting power cables turned out to involve an older model, raising questions about user error.

Recent reports indicated that the RTX 50-series graphics cards from Nvidia, particularly the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, were causing power connectors to melt. However, further investigation revealed that these issues were mistakenly attributed to these new models when in fact, an older model, the RTX 4090, was responsible due to probable user error during installation.

Initially, a Hong Kong media outlet, PCM, suggested that its testing of the RTX 5090D and RTX 5080 resulted in melted connectors, showcasing deteriorated power cables. It claimed, “Hong Kong media PCM reported that the 12VHPWR cable melted after testing the 5090D and 5080.”

Later clarifications indicated a clear burn mark on the RTX 4090, while the newer RTX 50 cards remained undamaged. This points to user error in connection installation. These developments draw attention to prior concerns regarding the original 12VHPWR connector, which had difficulties with overheating and melting due to improper installation.

To mitigate the risk of similar occurrences, Nvidia updated the connector to a revised design, which is less susceptible to misalignment during installation. Additionally, several cable manufacturers are exploring connectors with designs that reduce stress when installed in compact cases.

Despite initial worries surrounding power connection issues related to the RTX 50-series, current tests suggest that these models are performing well without any significant issues in this regard. However, they remain notoriously hard to find in stock.
