SGDQ 2025 Fundraises Over $2.4 Million for Charity
The Summer Games Done Quick event raised significant funds for Doctors Without Borders through a week-long marathon of speedruns.
The Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) marathon raised over $2.4 million for Doctors Without Borders during the first full week of July 2025. This amount is comparable to the funds raised in January’s Awesome Games Done Quick event.
The event featured speedruns of beloved classics such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Super Metroid, alongside modern titles like Deltarune. Generally held from late June to early July, this charity marathon is one of two major events organized by GDQ annually, with Awesome Games Done Quick taking place every January.
In addition to these main events, GDQ organizes smaller events, which provide a platform for speedrunners. They also hold impromptu charity events in response to disasters, like Hurricane Helene in 2024, showcasing their commitment to helping those in need.
The SGDQ event runs live on Twitch, with highlights uploaded to YouTube shortly after. This year’s marathon was inaugurated with a record speedrun of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, completed in under 38 minutes by speedrunner SuperSonic.
According to Doctors Without Borders, the organization offers medical assistance around the globe to individuals affected by conflict or natural disasters. They have benefited from SGDQ’s fundraising efforts since 2013, with the record amount of over $3 million raised in 2022.
During the 2025 marathon, Super Metroid and Sonic Adventure 2 were among the featured speedruns, with the latter producing an exhilarating contest between speedrunners Eddie and Oatsngoats, who completed the game mere seconds apart.
The last game showcased was Deltarune, accomplished by speedrunner Shayy in three hours and 45 minutes. Looking ahead, GDQ is set to return in January 2026, with AGDQ taking place in Pittsburgh.
