21 Years Later: Hope for the Resurgence of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

After being confined to the GameCube for two decades, there’s a glimmer of optimism for the revival of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes with the new Switch Online services.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes has been confined to the Nintendo GameCube since its release in 2004. However, recent developments, including the addition of GameCube titles to the Expansion Pack tier of Switch Online for Switch 2 users, brings renewed hope for its revival.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is a remake of the classic Metal Gear Solid game, redesigned to integrate features from Metal Gear Solid 2, enhancing visual quality and adding dynamic cutscenes. Upon its original launch, it received favorable reviews, although some fans expressed dissatisfaction with alterations to the soundtrack and storyline, particularly regarding Otacon’s character portrayal, which felt more awkward and comedic to some. Other players noted that the incorporation of mechanics from Twin Snakes made gameplay more accessible.

It is unfortunate that The Twin Snakes remains exclusive to the GameCube. Despite the lack of official plans from Konami to make these games available on current platforms, the release of GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo Switch Online, which faced its own legal entanglements, suggests that the prospects for The Twin Snakes might not be entirely bleak. Some fans hold out hope that the game could eventually be re-released on modern systems.
