Dan Houser's New Game in the Absurdaverse: A Mixed Reception

The first look at Dan Houser's new project within his Absurdaverse universe received a cautious response, raising questions about its originality and marketability.

Absurd Ventures, the game and creative studio founded by Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser, has provided a first look at characters from its upcoming Absurdaverse setting, along with news about a game currently in development there.

“A very first look at just a few characters from the ABSURDAVERSE. Prepare to meet some new kinds of heroes (and watch them suffer). More information to come this year about the first animation projects and about our original story-driven action-comedy adventure game set in the Absurdaverse, now in development at Absurd Ventures,” announced the studio.

I’m not entirely sure what that genre is, to be frank. “Action-comedy adventure” is so broad that it could be God of War (but funny), or it could be that shooter the Rick and Morty creators did. However, based on Houser’s previous work, we can anticipate that humor will be a focal point.

The character designs presented appear to rely heavily on stereotypes, showcasing a variety of archetypes including a trendy individual and a plus-sized woman, generating skepticism regarding innovation in the project.

This approach raises concerns that it might prioritize commercial appeal over creative narrative potential. Initial impressions suggest a world created more for merchandise than for storytelling, evoking a web series vibe rather than a modern gaming venture. Let’s hope the talented workforce behind Immortals of Aveum at Absurd Ventures can turn expectations around.
