A crackdown on cheaters in Star Citizen is taking place as Cloud Imperium Games initiated a significant ban wave. This action aims to counteract a recent uptick in cheating incidents within the game, which is not typically known for such occurrences. Reports of increased cheating began emerging earlier this year, a decade after the game first entered early access.
While Battle Royale or similar competitive formats often face challenges from cheating, Star Citizen has previously maintained a relatively safe environment. However, the problem has apparently escalated enough to provoke a firm reaction from the developers.
As announced by Lead Community Manager Ulf Kurschner on July 8, players’ reports have been instrumental in identifying the cheaters, and the company has expressed gratitude for the community’s involvement, stating their contributions are ‘genuinely appreciated.’
CIG has been discreet about its methods for enforcement. They haven’t disclosed specific identification techniques for offenders, possibly to prevent cheat developers from adapting their tools. Nonetheless, it’s clear that the anti-cheating measures have been ongoing and will likely lead to additional actions soon.
Additionally, Kurschner noted that although the company has historically adopted a lenient approach towards third-party mod tools that benefit player creativity, cheating has consistently breached the game’s terms of service. Players have reported various hack types, including advanced mechanics allowing users to loot from distant inventories, alongside more traditional cheats like aimbots and wallhacks.
With these steps, Cloud Imperium Games aims to safeguard the integrity of Star Citizen, ensuring a fair playing field for all its users.
