Closure of Steel Hunters: Wargaming Pulls the Plug on its Early Access Mech Shooter

Wargaming announces the discontinuation of Steel Hunters, a free-to-play mech shooter that debuted with much anticipation but failed to sustain player interest.

Just over six months post-launch, Steel Hunters, a free-to-play mech shooter developed by Wargaming, will cease operations in October,

The developers stated, “Today we share difficult news: we’ve made the decision to sunset Steel Hunter. You’ve given us so much passion and support but unfortunately we’ve come to the conclusion that continuing development is not sustainable. We know this isn’t the news anyone wanted to hear and we genuinely share in your disappointment.”

Despite a promising start, the game’s player base rapidly declined after a peak of 4,479 concurrent players at launch. Wargaming noted the numbers were unsustainable, marking Steel Hunters as one of many live-service games that failed to capture lasting interest.

In a recent announcement, players will still have access to servers for the next 90 days until October 8. All mechs will be unlocked for players during this time, offering a chance to play together with friends in community matches, including a farewell tournament.
